Hello, all. We have been rolling out Windows 10 to all our workstations at my job. Since we've been rolling them out over the past year, everyone has or I have run into an interesting, yet annoying, issue with Windows 10 that I cannot quite pin down. So most of these files are a couple MB each. This group also has some PCs that have been moved to Windows 10 and some that are still Windows 7. The PCs that are Windows 10 take about seconds to open one of these files, while the Windows 7 PCs open them in seconds.

It may not seem like much, but when you are interacting with hundreds of these files a day, it really adds up. All the PCs are on the same network switch. They all have the same SEP configuration. And they all get the same management tools and GPOs. Any thoughts on why this could be happening and what I could do to remedy the issue? Final update: we tested the issue with Windows 10 , and the issue disappeared again. Upgrading of the troubled PCs to also alleviated the issue. So we are planning to upgrade the rest to as well.

I'm not sure what it was about that caused the problem. But I'm not going to dive in to figure it out if they resolve the issue in the newer versions. Thanks for the help, all.

What makes you think it is windows? Are you running AV with active protection? Sounds more like files are being scanned before opening. Because the Windows version is the only obvious difference. If it was AV, it should affect Windows 7 and 10 the same way. If it is an active scan, why does it take longer on Windows 10? Spike might have hit the nail on the head, although I haven't found any documentation, I do believe Windows Defender in Windows 10 scans all network shares before opening them.

SMBv1 does work on Windows 10 though, though the deprecation might cause the delay you're experiencing. I'll definitely check into the CPU spikes and see if that jives. I will say, though, that the delay happens on each individual file opening - not on navigating to the folder. We also supposedly have the built-in anti-malware turned off in favor of using SEP.

I'm about to show my ignorance here, but how could I check from the user-side on which version of SMB the fileserver is using? Or would I need to loop in the fileserver admin for that? Since there is some similar issue like "can't access exe file in shared folder","application in shared SQL not work", that is because the smb is changed in windows We have talk to product group to confirm your issue, if there is any update , I will let you know.

I will say this, I have seen some of the craziest, most unexplainable things happen since the launch of Windows I agree with you that there's been a lot of weirdness. Microsoft has also really been botching updates as well.

It's frustrating. Just as an update, I tested today by trying Windows 10 version 1 year older than the on these PCs , and the issue disappeared regardless of the state of our AV. So the issue seems to relate to something that was changed in Windows 10 If anyone happens to have any though, I'd love to hear them.

Otherwise, I will update again once I can find an answer. I have been struggling with the same exact issue. I am also running , so I guess I will have to try and update to the newest version to see if that will help. I will note that I am experiencing the same issue on Server , when even copying the files over to a new place. So angry at this. I just updated to Windows 10 and I was unable to see an improvement.

The old location on a Server R2 was still slow. I have got this problem on and off since going to windows 10 and all its different versions.

Weird thing is - all my Win10 machines have the build now, all but one access the NAS drive Linux-based instantly, but this one PC took forever to contact the drive, then copying a 1kB text file across was painful.
